Hiking with Trekking Poles for Balance and Stabilty
Adding trekking poles to you walking routine engages the upper body and abs which can not only make walking more comfortable for those who suffer from joint pain or balance issues, but also turns walking into a whole-body activity. You can even burn up to 20 percent more calories than you would during "regular walking" says Suzanne Nottingham, author of Nordic Walking for Total Fitness. I love trekking poles because it helps with balance and takes pressure off of hips and knees.
Proper form, as in posture, is important as well as how you are gripping the poles. When our bodies are aligned correctly our back and gluteal muscles are able to work with more strength.
Lengthen spine, keep shoulders and ears aligned over hips.
